Westport House has been welcoming school tours with its unique blend of education and fun for many, many years. In fact, many teachers will remember coming here on their own school tours!

With a rich history including Grace O’Malley, 16th Century Pirate Queen, the beautiful 18th century historic house, an “old school” theme park and new adventure activities, it still retains its appeal to children.  If you are looking for a blend of fun, creativity, activity and education, look no further!

 

Looking to Engage and Enlighten?  

 

With 500 years of history, 30 rooms open with original artwork and antiques as well as 5 permanent exhibitions on show,   Westport House delivers an interesting learning experience for students of all ages.  With natural woodland and parkland grounds, you can also take a nature walk following our Tree Trail. Guided tours may be arranged - be sure to ask about our new Grace O’Malley guided tour (30 mins)– ideally suited to primary school students, it tells the tale of the relationship of the Browne family to the 16th century pirate queen. We also offer the more general Westport House & Browne family tour which provides a thorough overview of the history and heritage of the house and family featuring tales of pirates, pioneers and slave emancipators (45 mins).   

 

Looking for Outdoor Fun? 

 

The Pirate Adventure Park delivers hours of fun ideally suited to junior infants to sixth class students.  Our “old school” theme park features the Pirate Ship (swinging ship ride), Pirates Plunge (wet ‘n’ wild flume ride), Grace’s Bouncy Castle, Treasure Island Express (rumble through the jungle), The White Swan (pedal boats), Cannon Ball Run (slippery slide ride) and The Pirates Den (indoor soft play area).  Additional attractions include our Pitch & Putt course and the outdoor playground. As most of the attractions are outdoors, we encourage everyone to bring weather appropriate attire.  

Looking for Exhilaration & Adventure? 

 

Best suited to 8 year olds and up, Westport House provides a whole range of adventure activities to children….where they may try zorbing, archery, high ropes (NEW in 2013), zipwire, laser combat games and more…this is one school tour that won’t soon be forgotten!   For all adventure inquiries, please contact fun@theadventureislands.com or call 098 26907.

Gracy’s Café located on the grounds of Westport House offers group rates for school tours.  For more information, please contact Alannah on 087 133 4484.  Alternatively, we have an outdoor picnic area in the Old Coach Houses near the House so feel free to bring your own packed lunches.

As a primarily outdoor attraction, we ask that you please plan appropriately - this may mean sun hats, sun screen, umbrellas and rain gear all on the same day!  You can review the weather forecast on the Met Eireann website to plan for your visit.
