Set on the stunning Westport House historic estate, Orchard Cottage was built as home to the 10th Marquess and Marchioness of Sligo in the 1950s when they moved out of the “big house”.
The 400 acre estate is nestled in the middle of the gorgeous heritage town of Westport – in fact, the town horse-shoes around the entire estate to the south, north and east with the Atlantic and Clew Bay lying to the West.
Why not give yourself the royal treatment – you deserve it!
Check out our Slideshow below to view the house for yourself.
The estate itself provides for a myriad of things to do for visitors. A stay in Westport would not be complete with out a visit to Westport House* itself – nowadays, a visitor attraction set over three floors with 30 rooms open to the public and 6 permanent exhibitions. The house is still privately owned – you must pop in and download the Audio Tour App to hear the fascinating tale of the families behind this house.
For families with children under 12, the Pirate Adventure Park* is an old school adventure park with boats, trains, slides and rides – all themed around the pirate queen “Grace O’Malley” who ruled the seas from Scotland to Spain in the 16th century. The big house is built on the ruins of one of her castles and she is one of the ancestors of the Browne family. Kids will love the thrills of the park!
The Westport Train Tour* is a sightseeing tour that picks up in the farmyard and will take you around the town, estate and quay showcasing 45 sights.
After you learn all there is to know about this award-winning town, be sure to pop into Gracy’s Pizzeria & Bistro in the farmyard to enjoy a wood-fired pizza oven, an evening’s entertainment or a drink.
Westport itself offers tons for visitors to do. Hop on your bike or hire one locally and ride the 42km/26m Great Western Greenway – an off-road cycling trail to Achill Island. Take in one of our many blue flag beaches. Locals favourites include Old Head, Carrownisky or for some peaceful pier-jumping at high tide, check out Lecanvey. Take a pilgrimage up Croagh Patrick – the holy mountain from which St Patrick is said to have banished the snakes out of Ireland. Even if you only make it as far as the statue of himself, the views are well worth it. Hop in the car and take a day trip to Leenane – one of the most beautiful drives in the country – and to Connemara (40 minutes) or head north to Achill or Ceide Fields in Belmullet.
