Designed by the famous architects Richard Cassels and James Wyatt in the 18th century, Westport House in Westport, County Mayo, is one of Ireland’s most beautiful historic homes open to the public. It enjoys a superb parkland setting with lake, terraces, wonderful gardens and magnificent views overlooking Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Achill, Clare Island and Ireland’s holy mountain Croagh Patrick. Our Objects of the Day are two items you might be surprised to find in our collection ... two fabulous ostrich feather hats (➡️) which once belonged to Lady Alice Evelyn Mahon (née Browne), the mother of renowned art historian Sir Denis Mahon.
Lady Alice (1877-1970) grew up in Mayo, at Westport House. She was the daughter of Henry Ulick Browne, 5th Marquess of Sligo. She married John Fitzgerald Mahon in 1898, and the couple had their only child, Denis, in London in 1910; Denis went on to become one of the leading scholars and collectors of Italian Baroque art of his generation, and he was instrumental in the authentication of Caravaggio's The Taking of Christ here at the National Gallery of Ireland in the early nineties.
Lady Alice purchased these two plumed hats in London, from the luxury department store Harvey Nichols. Her taste in hats was true to the fashion of the period, when hats were particularly large, with brims often reaching past the wearer’s shoulders. Hatpins, which sometimes measured over a foot in length, were used to keep the pieces secure - one of the photographs here shows Lady Alice wearing a similar plumed hat. Such hats became less fashionable during the First World War when smaller and plainer hats became increasingly popular.
These hats, as well as lots more fascinating objects including war memorabilia, antique furniture, and family photograph albums, form part of the Sir Denis Mahon collection and family archive which Sir Denis generously gifted to the National Gallery of Ireland in 2010, alongside his extensive library.

Westport House, Co. Mayo - What a difference a year or so makes - Essential emergency repair works have commenced at Westport House. The works are to stop the ingress of water into the building as it is causing significant damage to the historic house. The house developed over generations with contributions by architects Richard Cassels, Thomas Ivory & James Wyatt. Howth Castle Dublin visit with avdecoratedublin
Former home for over 850 years to the recusant St. Lawrence family who sold up in 2019. I recalled a childhood visit which ended up in the dining room late into the night with all present save your’s truly, drenched in copious amounts of cognac served in balloon glasses the size of goldfish bowls. The host retired to the dining table lying prostrate on the said and reciting the history of the castle and that of his ancestors. As a wide-eyed child I heard of Gráine Uaile the 16th C pirate queen who on calling at the castle asking for sustenance as had been the tradition among Irish nobles, was sent away by the Anglo-Norman Lord of Howth. In revenge the pirate queen kidnapped and carried off the heir to the St. Lawrence Lordship of Howth and only returned the child on condition his family agreed to respect the Irish tradition of open hospitality to anyone who called upon them henceforth. I do believe my parents had been invited guests and the dinner table at Howth Castle was always at least till 2019, set with an extra place for anyone who might call unannounced. Until the late 1990s the front door of the Castle was always left wide open as part of this tradition of open house imposed upon the family over 400 years prior by the aforementioned Grace O’Malley or Graine Uaile. It is somewhat poignant and to me at least sad that both the descendants of both Graine Uaile and the Lord of Howth have vacated forever their much loved ancestral homes in recent years after so many centuries. Today was a delightful return to Howth Castle and perhaps an indulgent reminiscence on a magical childhood memory. Thanks avdecoratedublin and remembering my parents, Penny Gaisford St. Lawrence and Danny Galvin the incomparable clock expert.

Sheelyn Browne in The Irish Times speaking about the sale of her former family ancestral home in 2017. A link to the article is featured on my stories. The efforts to keep the rain out of this historic home and to allow it to remain in the Browne Family exhausted many fortunes over the centuries. Financial pressures eventually led to the decision of the Brownes to end their tenure of the property after nearly 300 years and entrust it into the hands of the local Hughes family, once tenants of the estate in generations past. Despite eventually becoming one of the most visited tourist sites in Mayo, many works of art and pieces of furniture were sold over the years to try and preserve the architectural legacy of the Browne family. It was now clearly evident in the 20th century that the wealth of previous generations was gone which had once sustained a property such as this. Efforts made to make the estate and house self-sustaining, while preserving it intact, resulted in deeper and deeper debt. The Browne family reluctantly agreed to sell the estate following an accumulation of debt that amounted to millions of euro, borrowed to develop the estate. Westport House and Estate appeared on the market in 2016, with an asking price of €10 million, the county of Mayo held its breath. There was now a distinct possibility that the house could be sold to some reclusive billionaire who would shut the gates of this much-loved piece of our county’s heritage. Luckily for the people of Mayo, the philanthropic spirit of the local Hughes family is matched by their entrepreneurial and business acumen. Today Westport House is beginning to emerge from scaffolding following Phase 01 of an intensive restoration of the fabric of the building. There is so much to say about Westport House that I hardly know where to begin. Built on the site of a medieval castle owned by Granuaile, the famous pirate queen, it remained in the same family for hundreds of years. It has something for everyone- amazing architecture, important interiors, gorgeous gardens and a heady history.⠀

The present house was designed by Richard Castle in 1731 and extended by Thomas Ivory in 1778. It has beautiful 18th Century interiors, including a room by James Wyatt. Its setting is sublime, in rolling parkland overlooking Clew Bay with Croagh Patrick in the distance. The estate is attached to one of Ireland’s few planned towns, and arguably its most attractive.⠀

The Browne family were forced to sell in 2017 after accumulating substantial debts. It seemed likely that it would be purchased as a private residence and closed to the public, however the local Hughes family bought it with a plan to invest €50 million to maintain the estate as a tourist attraction for the benefit of the local community.⠀

This garden is designed to represent the journey from homelessness and sleeping rough to living in a safe and secure home. Reflective of the physical and emotional journey taken by their clients, this garden provides a respite from the pressures of homelessness.
The benches were made from a fallen tree from Westport Estate and our talented team member, Francie O’Toole, made the beautiful wooden pathways pictured from Irish Larch.

What is the Problem?
Biodiversity is fundamental to both planet and people. It provides us with clean air and water, food, and medicines. But biodiversity is in crisis.
With increasing and prolonged droughts and fires, damaging millions of hectares of farm, range and forest lands, and floods threatening the loss of both rural and urban areas, peatland degradation triggering further carbon loss, and permafrost melting affecting both arctic and mountain ranges, the European ecological crisis has never been more dire.
European population growth coincides with loss of biodiversity, but also with urbanisation leading to fragmentation, abandonment of rural areas alongside loss of large grazers. This has cascading ecological impacts, including shrub encroachment, habitat loss, invasive species, and fires.
Changes in climate, such as drying in southern and inland regions, and increased precipitation in other areas are predicted to intensify, threatening ecosystem services, and rural livelihoods. Decades of poor and inappropriate land management, reducing living river systems and freshwater availability through river “improvement”, and unsustainable agricultural systems and exploitation are at the core of the causes.
While considerable success has been achieved across a variety of European landscapes in restoring degraded lands, these efforts have generally been fragmented, isolated, and at limited scales. This is significantly due to competition for funding and lack of cooperation between rural stakeholders.

At the first attempt (leaving the highly recommended thewyattwestport tonight), we found a lovely local bar! It's a proper old school establishment, with local people and a shop! A dream find and in the middle of town.
Iggy was made very welcome and this pub gets a 10/10!

Over the last few months I haven’t really been shooting photos for ‘fun’. It’s all been work related - shooting mainly corporate/commercial projects to specific briefs. It hasn’t allowed much time to get out, get creative and enjoy the art of photography. So after been inspired this past week (thanks joannegibbons93 😎) I’ve made an effort to do that and get out with my camera. The photos haven’t been anything groundbreaking, it’s more about the doing, rather than the result. But it’s such a joy to get out again. 📸🌅
